CHAPTER 12

GAGE

“Gage.” Lily’s voice is timid as it dances across my bare skin. “I’m here for you, but you also don’t have to tell me anything you don’t want to.”

Even though my every instinct is telling me not to, I believe her. I trust her. And I want, no, I need to tell Lily what happened at the rehearsal, as well as more about my past. I owe it to the both of us. It might also be a good idea to discuss how we have once again found ourselves in bed together, what that means to her as well as me, and what we should do going forward. I’m a thirty-nine year old, grown-ass man, for God’s sake; I should be able to have an open conversation by now.

I drag one hand down my face and sigh. “I fucked up the rehearsal.”

“You said that. But what does that mean?” Lily encourages, bringing her tiny fingers to draw circles on my chest.

“I was late. I was nervous. I couldn’t make my fingers work right. And then I got angry and left.” It sounds so lame when I say it out loud like this.

“What about the band?” Lily asks. “How did they react?”

I roll my eyes. “Not great.”

“Did they quit?” She props herself to search my face, her jewel-like eyes wide with worry.

I shrug. “Not sure. You’ll probably be hearing from Dave about the whole thing pretty soon. If not from the press.”

Lily sits up fully, the pitch of her voice rising with her. “The press?”

“I may or may not have been caught by the paparazzi, too,” I confess begrudgingly.

Lily lays back down, nuzzling into my side once again. “I guess I’ll have to talk to Dave to find out what the band is thinking,” she murmurs as if she’s talking to herself more than to me. “A simple google search will reveal whatever the tabloids are saying. But overall, I don’t think this is too bad. We can come back from this.”

I stiffen at her words. “We?”

Lily props up again to give me a stern look. “Yes, we. We are still a team, Gage. That is, unless you want to fire me.”

“God, no,” I almost shout, catching her by the hair and pulling her back into my arms. “I need you, Lily. I can’t do any of this without you.”

As soon as the words escape my lips, an enormous weight lifts from my shoulders. I might sound like a needy little bitch, but it’s the truth. This kind of life is too stressful to go through it alone; too painful, too lonely. Having to push through the past few days without Lily’s help, especially after I got used to having her around, was practically unbearable. My mind can’t even entertain the idea of not having her on my team anymore.

Glancing down at her, I find her face lightly flushed. I bring my hand to her forehead to check her temperature. It seems normal.

“I’m fine,” she reassures me, taking my hand it giving it the gentlest of kisses.
